How to Choose the Right Photographer for Your Family Photo Shoot

Choosing the right photographer for your family photo shoot is an important decision. After all, these photos will become treasured memories—images that capture the spirit of your family at a particular moment in time. With so many photographers to choose from, it can feel overwhelming to find someone who fits your style, personality, and family dynamic. Here are some key factors to consider when choosing a photographer for your family.

Style Matters: Find a Photographer Whose Work Resonates with You

Every photographer has a unique style, and finding someone whose vision matches your own is crucial. Do you prefer candid, natural moments or more posed, formal portraits? Are you drawn to vibrant, high-contrast colours, or do you prefer soft, natural tones? Browse potential photographers' portfolios to get a sense of how they use light, capture emotion, and frame their subjects. For example, my style is family-led and focused on connection. I don’t use props, poses, or overly styled outfits. Instead, I work with natural light and use playful, engaging prompts to create a relaxed atmosphere. This allows me to capture genuine moments of connection between family members—images that feel real and authentic.

Consider the Photographer’s Experience with Children

Family photo shoots often involve young children, and working with kids requires a special set of skills. A photographer who is comfortable and experienced in working with children will help your session go smoothly, even when little people don’t feel like cooperating! When choosing a photographer, look for someone who understands that children can be unpredictable and who knows how to create an environment where they feel comfortable. My sessions are child-led, meaning there’s no pressure on the kids to behave in a certain way. I use years of experience working with children of all developmental ages to make sure they feel at ease, and I let the session unfold naturally. This approach leads to images that capture the true essence of your family, with no forced smiles or stiff poses.

Connection Over Perfection

It’s common for families, especially parents, to feel pressure to make sure everything is “perfect” for their family photo shoot—whether that’s getting everyone in coordinated outfits or waiting for a time when the house looks its best. But perfection needn't be the goal. What makes family photos truly special is the connection between family members. That’s why I prioritise capturing genuine interactions, not perfect poses. I’ve worked with many mums who have told me they delayed booking a family photo shoot because they were waiting for the “perfect” time. My advice is: “don’t wait”. Your family’s love, energy, and connection are what matter most, and those are the moments you’ll want to remember when you look back on these photos.

Communication and Comfort Are Key

When you’re working with a photographer, it’s essential that you feel comfortable. From the initial inquiry to the session itself, how does the photographer communicate with you? Do they take the time to answer your questions and understand your situation? A photographer who listens and makes you feel at ease will create an enjoyable, stress-free experience for your family.

I believe in making sure my clients feel relaxed from the start. A successful photo session isn’t just about getting great shots—it’s about creating a space where your family feels comfortable enough to be themselves.

Consider Practical Details: Availability, Pricing, and Location

Finally, don’t forget to consider practical factors like the photographer’s availability, pricing, and location. Make sure the photographer is available during the time frame you need and that their packages fit within your budget. Location is also important—some photographers may specialise in outdoor shoots, while others prefer studio settings. Choosing a family photographer is about finding someone whose style and approach resonate with you, who is experienced with children, and who prioritises genuine connection. With the right photographer, your family photo shoot will not only result in beautiful images but also (hopefully!) a memorable and enjoyable experience.
